Check Out Footage Of The Mysterious New PlatinumGames RPG, Granblue Fantasy

Back in mid-2016, action game developer PlatinumGames announced a partnership with Cygames to make a PlayStation 4 RPG based on their massively popular mobile RPG, Granblue Fantasy. Today, we get our first real good look at the game, titled Granblue Fantasy: Project Re:Link.

The first few minutes of the video are a little dry, showing off the environmental design as the main character strolls through an idyllic village visited by a massive airship. Before too long, action starts, and a lot of traditional PlatinumGames-style dodging and combo mechanics come into play. The trailer ends with a series of chain spells that destroys a larger enemy.

The game is based on the world of Granblue Fantasy, a Cygames-produced mobile RPG for Android and iOS, which has music and art from Final Fantasy legends Nobuo Uematsu and art Hideo Minaba respectively. It is a massive hit in Japan, having been downloaded over eighteen million times. Despite an English release, the game has never officially been released in the west.

There is no word over whether Project Re:Link will ever come to the west, either, and it currently sits without an even tentative release window. Check out the trailer below and maybe brush up on your Japanese skills if you're hoping to play it.

Our Take
The game looks extremely cool, so hopefully it does make it to the west. I have little familiarity with Granblue Fantasy, but it has a reputation of being a modern interpretation of old school Final Fantasy, so it's interesting to see a spin-off RPG be a fast-paced action game.
