Watching Modern Games Run On A Weird '70s TV Is A Nostalgic Trip

Technology is cool. Technology is strange. The weird pull of watching gears turn and electric circuits fire has a strange pull for a lot of people. The strangeness of that pull has never been more apparent than when I try to describe why watching someone hook up modern consoles and a PC to a strange '70s TV shaped like an astronaut's helmet makes me happy.

Tech how-to Youtube channel My Mate Vince celebrated is 100,000th subscriber by doing that. The JVC Videosphere is a rad-looking piece of tech, a spherical television complete with a metal chain that lets you hang it anywhere in a room you can attach a hook to. And through a series of converters, machines, and wire-modding, Mr. Vince was able to get a Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC running on a 40-year-old CRT.

The games are as you recognize them, but the blue-tinted screen modifies their "feel" quite a bit. The TV can't seem to handle Forza 7, and I honestly mistook it for an early PS2 game due to the lack of pixel density on the Videosphere. Horizon may as well look like an old newsreel. And Cuphead, of course, evokes an even deeper sense of nostalgia than it already did.

The video is about 20 minutes long, but if you're into the strange pull of convoluted tech setups as much as I am, it's worth watching the whole thing.
